TOP 10 FOODIE MOVIESOF ALL TIME!!!

October 11, 2002

"Food, glorious food" sang Oliver (or somebody in that awful movie), and food has been a staple of cinema here and abroad forever. If you want to build up and appetite, try any of these films, which are the Top 10 Foodie Movies of All Time!!

cover 10. The Dinner Game (1998): Okay, so maybe the focus of this movie isn't exactly on the food, but this French farce about what befalls a sophisticate who decides to have a dinner party at which everyone brings the dumbest person they can find is a stitch. If you have to see a French movie, try this one.
cover 9. Who Is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe? (1978): One by one, the great chefs of Europe are being bumped off. But by whom? A nice little murder mystery/comedy starring George Segal and Jacqueline Bisset, with a fine supporting cast of English and French actors.
cover 8 Monty Python's the Meaning of Life (1983): A wonderful piece of silliness throughout, but the adventures of Mr. Creosote (Terry Jones) in the restaurant make this one of the great gourmand movies of all time.
cover 7 What's Cooking? (2000): What makes you think more of food than Thanksgiving. This nice little film follows four separate ethnic families in Los Angeles' Fairfax district as they prepare for Thanksgiving. A family and food movie.
cover 6 Like Water for Chocolate (1992): Follows the tribulations of Pedro (Marco Leonardi) and Tina (Lumi Cavazos) as they deal with Tina's stern and demanding mother who insists that Tina's oldest sister marries before Tina. What wonders one can do with a wedding cake!
cover 5 A Private Function (1984):It's 1947 in a small town in England. Rationing, particularly of meat, is still in effect. So what do you do with an illegally grown pig when the locals want to celebrate the nuptials of Princess Elizabeth? Only Michael Palin and Maggie Smith can answer that. A wonderful little film.
cover 4 Eat Drink Man Woman (1994): This grand Ang Lee movie follows a retired restaurateur and his three daughters through their ritual of fabulous Sunday dinners. Guaranteed to make your mouth water.
cover 3 Tampopo (1985): A very funny Japanese movie about a trucker, Goro, who rides in to town to help Tampopo develop the perfect noodle restaurant. But it's about so much more than that. Warning: not for the kids or the repressed.
cover 2 Big Night (1996): Stanley Tucci's great movie about two brothers (Tucci and the ever-present Tony Shaloub) who decide to try to save their failing Italian restaurant with one special night. A very special movie.
cover 1 Babette's Feast (1987):This is the feast movie to end all feast movies. Babette, a French woman, agrees to care for two elderly Danish sisters. They agree to allow her to prepare the meal that will celebrate their late father's 100th birthday anniversary. What happens then is spectacular. Well worth a watch.
